Dog Training Tip #1

If you are thinking about getting a puppy, read this fabulous book "BEFORE YOU GET YOUR PUPPY" for free on the internet by Ian Dunbar. We highly recommend this book to all our clients, friends and anyone thinking about getting a puppy! Visit http://www.siriuspup.com/beforebook.html and download it today for free!
Always remember to PRAISE your puppy or dog EVERY time he/she comes to you, even when you haven't asked it to. NEVER call your dog to you and then scold it, hit or yell at it. When you do this you teach it that when it comes to you it gets in trouble and is a BAD thing. Later when you really want it to come, he/she will think "why should I go to them, they just yell at me, that's no fun! I'm going to run the other way."

Having your dog come to you can save it's life! Make it a great thing by being happy and excited, give she/he treats and lots of praise. Doing this consistently will ensure your dog will come to you in ever situation.  Dog Training Tip #2

Many people come to me and ask, "why does my puppy chew everything, it's driving me crazy?"

Puppies have the same issues babies do and that's called "teething." Your puppy does not understand that those $200 shoes cost so much, or that your couch is not a wooden chewing post. All they care about is that it feels good on their gums and it doesn't hurt them to do it.

Some advice on what you can do to help prevent this.
  1. provide them with something they CAN chew on such as a dog chew toy. There are many on the market these days including items made by KONG. Be sure that the toy doesn't have anything inside it that your puppy can choke on (such as stuffing, squeeky things or marbles). Kongs are great because you can fill them up with yummy treats and actually freeze it, so when you give it to your puppy, it's cold on their gums. You can also try natural bones but I don't recommend raw hide or pigs ears.
  2. use a crate when you are away. Puppies love to be inside a small area like a den. They feel safe and less stress than a big huge space like a house. Give them a comfy bed and the Kong and they will chew on the toy until they tucker themselves out. Then they just sleep until you get home.
  3. just like "child proofing" your home, you MUST "puppy proof" too. It's not fair to blame the puppy for chewing those shoes, if you left them out for them to do it. During this time, everything is a chew toy to them, so remember to put away anything you don't want them to chew at.
  4. exercise, exercise, exercise! A tired puppy is a quiet puppy. Puppies need a lot of play time and stimulation but only for short time frames (20-30 min) at a time, a few times a day. They also need lots of sleep too, so be sure to exercise based on the age of your puppy.

Remember, your puppy is not chewing something because they want to get back at you or want to be mean. They naturally like to chew so give them the exercise and attention they need as well as something they CAN chew on that's safe and good for them.
