A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist does essentially what an anesthesiologist does. They give people medications, monitor vital signs, and maintain hemodynamic function. In other words they put people to see prior to operations and maintain them during the procedure.

At some facilities they work independently while at others they work with a supervising anesthesiologist. At a few sites the Anesthesiologist puts the patient to sleep and the anesthetist maintains them.
