The green trend is growing rapidly. You'd think most of Seattle had switched over to green cleaners, but, unfortunately, the full shift to non-toxic products hasn't happened yet. The green trend is growing rapidly. You'd think most of Seattle had switched over to green cleaners, but, unfortunately, the full shift to non-toxic products hasn't happened yet. Despite the sunny outlook and higher profile of green cleaners, the category is still a niche market, making up less than 1 percent of overall sales in the household cleaners industry, which in 2002 reached more than $4 billion, according New York-based Marketresearch.com. Why such the slow shift? Advertising and marketing for one - we're most familiar with the traditional brands like Clorox. Also, most of us have been raised on chemical cleaners (our mom used them; they can't be THAT bad). However, they're actually worse than bad. As the Organic Consumers Association points out, "In 2000, cleaning products were responsible for nearly 10% of all toxic exposures reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers, accounting for 206,636 calls. Of these, 120,434 exposures involved children under six, who can swallow or spill cleaners stored or left open inside the home." But that's not all. They are also linked to a variety of cancers, autism, asthma, and environmental pollution (our soil and water supply).
I got into green businesses and green living 12 years ago when I started working at a local food co-op. Green Cleaning Seattle is a direct descendent of my devotion to green businesses and natural living. I hope that it represents more than a cleaning service, but also a new way of life: a way of life that puts the heath of the earth first. Our goal is to help create a healthier way of life for all who share this planet.
I started Green Cleaning Seattle while in graduate school and it has been growing ever since. I currently have six cleaners and service both homeowners and commercial clients. We use Biokleen, Seventh Generation, and Shaklee - we use cleaning brands that produce ONLY natural products. We do not use (or support) any cleaning brands that have a line of chemical-based cleaners - even if they also have a "green" line of cleaners. For example, Clorox has recently launched their line "Green Works". At first glance this might seem positive; however, putting our capital into "Green Works" is also supporting a company that is putting out chemical products.
Some of the great things about being a small and local green business is being able to offer services that that I believe in, to establish a business structure that puts energy into worldwide green economics, local business sustainability, and authentic relationships with each of our clients. As a small local biz, we support other local green businesses and are striving to connect our green community to an array of healthy options.
