Originally beginning his career as a reserve police officer for the Palo Alto Police Department, Greg Munks has shown an impressive aptitude for law enforcement at all levels of service, and he is the current Sheriff of San Mateo County. As Sheriff, Greg Munks has implemented a number of important programs to help develop the community, decrease crime, and more effectively train law enforcement officers. Greg Munks was elected to the top position on June 6, 2006. Previously, Greg Munks held the position of Undersheriff of San Mateo County for 13 years, beginning in 1993. A demonstrated expert in a variety of law enforcement specialties, Greg Munks leads the Sheriff's Office with the intelligence and experience of a 30-year veteran. Some projects Sheriff Greg Munks has spearheaded over the course of his career include the Palo Alto Police Department's Domestic Violence Response Policy, the Palo Alto Police Bicycle Patrol Program, and the development of the Palo Alto Management Academy. Besides his impressive accomplishments, Sheriff Greg Munks also played an integral role in the creation of the Community Alliance to Rebuild our Neighborhood Project (CARON), a wide-reaching and highly successful gang violence initiative. Outside of law enforcement programs, Greg Munks has also been highly involved in aiding programs that help the community at large. Currently, Greg Munks sits on the board of the San Mateo County Service League, as well as on the board of Youth and Family Enrichment Services of San Mateo County. In the past, Sheriff Greg Munks held board positions on the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center; Rebuilding Together, formerly called Christmas in April; and the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy. Prior to beginning his career, Sheriff Greg Munks earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Menlo College. In 1995, Greg Munks also earned an MBA from Golden Gate University. In his spare time, Greg Munks enjoys playing golf, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Experience

Developed and implemented the City of Palo Alto Management Academy and the Palo Alto Bicycle Patrol Program. Wrote, implemented and managed a Seat Belt Safety Program Grant, developed the Palo Alto Police Department's Domestic Violence Response Policy. Recieved the Police Officer of the Year Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1985 and numerous commendations for outstanding arrests and bravery. Current chair of the San Mateo County Terrorism Working Group. Assisted in the development of the Community Alliance to Rebuild our Neighborhood (CARON) Project - a highly successful collaborative effort to combat gang violence in the North Fair Oaks area. Assisted in the development and formation of the school resource and community police programs. Updated and initiated modernized Human Resources policies and procedures for the Sheriff's Office to include an innovative Internal Affairs tracking program. Served as Incident Commander throughout the Scott Peterson murder trial. Successfully managed numerous high-risk incidents including SWAT Call-outs and officer involved shootings. Led department efforts for the San Mateo County Radio Replacement Project - a nine year effort to replace the Sheriff's Office radio system and the county-wide mutual aid, tactical radio and microwave system, a $20 million project.
