Is there relief for allergies?

Cranio Sacral: Generally speaking, balancing the nervous and fascial systems with craniosacral and massage therapy can help the body cope more efficiently with whatever triggers it is reacting to (even allergies). This helps ease the overall burden on the body's immunity.

Natural relief for spring allergies:
1. DIET: You want to stabilize your mast cell membranes: these are the cells that release histamine, the start for the allergy cascade. Fragile mast cell membranes mean they will release histamine easily. Essential fatty acids, quercitin and bioflavenoids are one way to achieve healthier membranes. These are found in wild fatty fish, nuts, seeds, fresh veggies and fruits. Supplements are also available but won’t be as helpful if the diet isn’t “cleaned up”. Decreasing trans and hydrogenated fats will also make healthier membranes. Decrease mucous forming foods such as dairy, bananas and citrus. Getting food allergy testing is also beneficial and is covered by many insurance plans.
2. PHYSICAL MEDICINE: Keeping the sinuses clear will also decrease symptoms of seasonal allergies. Neti pot/sinus irrigation with sea salt, filtered water and a tiny pinch of turmeric (anti-inflammatory and tissue healing) is very helpful. N-acetyl-cysteine and natural nasal sprays will keep mucous thin and decrease symptoms. Accupressure and massage to the sinuses will also stimulate drainage as will cranial-sacral and chiropractice adjustments.
3. HOMEOPATHY: There are many remedies that target seasonal allergies.

Allergies are your body’s nervous system reacting to whatever the irritant it can’t take anymore of. If one is already holding on to too much emotional trauma you are already taxing your nervous system. If we are already irritated in our daily lives the exposure to something naturally irritating will exasperate the symptoms.
Working on our emotional issues will give space to our nervous system to take on more. Then we will have a stronger tolerance to environmental irritants.
So blaming the environment for the enhanced symptoms is only half the battle, the other half is what you are suppressing emotionally.

Client Examples:
People that I have worked with food allergies had childhood trauma while eating with there family.
People with Nature allergies had traumas while playing outside.
People with chemical allergies had traumas at work.

Massage Therapy

Spring Allergies can be down-right exhausting! Supporting your body’s harmony with massage therapy can reduce muscle tension related to the expression of symptoms, as well as address specific areas affected. Facial massage near the sinus region can create great relief of sinus pressure and trigger point release in the scalenes and other neck muscles can support proper breathing and circulation. Massage also helps support healthy sleep patterns, which may be compromised during the attack of spring allergies.

Cranio Sacral

If you are experiencing sinus congestion and inflammation because of your allergies, there are some very effective craniosacral and massage techniques that can help alleviate this.

Generally speaking, balancing the nervous and fascial systems with craniosacral and massage therapy can help the body cope more efficiently with whatever triggers it is reacting to (even allergies). This helps ease the overall burden on the body's natural immunity. Additionally, techniques can be done in sessions to help open up and relax the sinus cavities in the face, which is especially beneficial in providing relief from congested and inflamed sinuses. People feel more clear headed and bright-eyed after receiving this work. Coming in for regular sessions just prior to and during allergy season is a great way to treat sensitivities to seasonal pollens, grasses, and trees.

Aromatherapy

You can utilize essential oils to treat your symptoms so that they do not get worse and lead to infection. For stuffy nose, I recommend inhaling Eucalyptus in a steam bowl with a towel over your head for 5 minutes each morning. For relief throughout the day, carry around a bottle of eucalyptus, lemon, and tea tree for an anti-bacterial and mucolytic (dissolves mucous) treatment. This will help to prevent a cold from setting in as you are experiencing allergy symptoms.

Acupuncture

There are several different options to explore from various traditions. The thing to remember about allergies, is that they can have varying energetic root-causes from person to person. Certain approaches will work for some and not at all for others. From the Ayuredic tradition, the “neti pot” is a wonderful tool when used properly. They range in shape/size but it’s essentially a mini-teapot, and you fill it with warm water and a ¼ teaspoon of fine non-iodized sea salt. The spout is placed into one nostril and you allow the solution to pour through the sinus cavity and out the other side. There are also stronger solutions that can be added to it. One I like is called Sinutone, which is made by The Herbalist, right here in Seattle. From the Western herbal perspective, the combination of Nettles and Quercetin can be a safe and natural anti-histamine. Its easily found in a capsule, and I recommend a freeze-dried form if possible for maximum potency. Finally, from Chinese medicine, Bi Yan Pian is a formula that can be obtained at many health food stores that carry Chinese herbal patent medicines. A stronger or more customized formula can be prescribed through a licensed acupuncturist. Chrysanthemum is a wonderful herb that can be drank in tea form or also placed over the eyes (in teabag form) to bring relief of various allergic symptoms. Acupuncture can help address the root cause from a constitutional level over time, and has actually helped resolve people’s seasonal allergies. Finally, one must look at the season in which they are occurring and the energetics behind it. For example, if they are Spring allergies, this is the time of the Wood Element and the meridians of our Liver and Gallbladder. There are MANY different aspects to look at from this point. I have written essays on each of the five elements and their respective meridians. For more information on a particular season/element, please refer to my website.

Although I understand your need for relief, it is important to remember that relieving the symptom of something does not address the cause of why the body is responding that way in the first place. Rest assured that it is not normal to have allergies. Allergies are merely a response of the body not a program of the body. Therefore, logically it would seem prudent to find out why your body is responding that way. So my approach is to get back to supporting your immune and nervous systems. Here are a few ways to help you do that:
1. Allergies are just a sign that the neuroimmune system is out of balance. Dr. David Felten, a scientist from the University of Rochester in upstate New York, discovered that the nervous system and the immune system are in essence one system. He discovered that every cell of the immune system is communicated to by the nervous system, telling those cells what to do and where to go. True cellular technology if you will. So how does one support his or her neuroimmune system? One very important way is to take the pressure off your brain stem and spinal cord: the nervous system’s super highway. Chiropractic adjustments have long been shown to reduce nerve stress and enhance the nervous systems ability to communicate with all aspects of itself, including the immune system. If communication is enhanced then function of the immune system can be restored and balanced. Simple tests at your Chiropractor’s office can determine whether your nervous system is under stress.
2. Reduce body stress. Scientists have long known that stress suppresses the neuroimmune system. There are three forms of stress: thoughts, traumas and toxins. So, get back to stress relieving activities like walking, exercising, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, eating well, thinking well, moving well and sleeping well.
3. Try to avoid foods that are common allergens which in turn set the neuroimmune system off on a tangent. These include dairy (all forms including yogurt and cheese), wheat, soy, peanuts (which are not nuts, but are actually beans).
4. Supplement your diet with fish oil. There are over two thousand studies pointing towards the necessity of supplementing with fish oil. The molecules within fish oil that we are looking for are EPA and DHA. Many of these studies show that the neuroimmune system is supported by the consumption of fish oil.
