What Janet does
Janet Schlarbaum is the mother of four beautiful children, nine wonderful grandchildren, and one precious great-grandson. Born in Mountain Home, ID in 1941, Janet Schlarbaum graduated high school in 1959 and cosmetology school in 1960. Following her graduation from cosmetology school, Janet moved with her new husband, Burt Schlarbaum, to the small Idaho town of White Bird, where she opened her own beauty parlor, A Touch of Class. Burt installed the sinks, Janet painted the walls, and together the Schlarbaums hung the mirrors. The salon was a labor of love for Janet, and when she closed the doors in 2004 to provide daycare to her new great grandson, Cason, it was bittersweet. In White Bird, Burt Schlarbaum opened a modest auto repair shop, and the Schlarbaums settled into life, married with children. A Touch of Class continued to grow and thrive, and Janet Schlarbaum became active in her children's academic careers. When she did not have clients, Janet Schlarbaum enjoyed chaperoning field trips, attending her sons' baseball games, and taking her daughter Emily door to door selling Girl Scout cookies. When Emily was eight years old, she desperately wanted a pet of her own. After begging and pleading, Janet Schlarbaum and her husband agreed to allow Emily to purchase a kitten with her allowance. Little did they know, the one they picked out was carrying a litter of babies, and before they knew it, one kitten had turned into 4! After selling all of the kittens to neighborhood children, the Schlarbaums realized how much fun and how profitable raising and breeding the furry critters could be, so they purchased a male cat and have been breeding them ever since. In fact, Janet Schlarbaum is still known by local children as "the kitten lady," a title she bears proudly.
