  • Giving Advice - Pet Peeve

I just realized that I have a pet peeve about comments in the business forums. As any pet peeve it might just be me feeling this way, but since it probably is just me, I of course thought it worth mentioning.

When people ask for advice in their topic it kinda bugs me when well-intentioned individuals respond by giving the title & author of their favorite book on the subject. We've all seen it, I ask about 'X' and someone chimes in with, "Oh, you want to know about 'X,' just read, 'Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About X & Then Some,' by Oliver J Xinstein."

Why does that bug me? Well, if I were the one asking for help and an online forum is the route I chose to get that advice I wouldn't be hoping for an answer that would take me to amazon.com or Barnes & Noble, a search and then 5 to 20 hours of reading (not that I am against reading). I would actually be asking for a little piece of wisdom. Perhaps something I hadn't thought about before or even a new spin on a recycled thought. Yes, I would want simple, quick & easy. Is that lazy or efficient?

Don't get me wrong; some of the best advice is a combination of both. When some person who is well-read and more knowledgeable than I gives me their favorite gem from the book they just read and also gives me the reference in case I want to follow up later to further my understanding of the subject. That is good stuff. A fancy title is one thing but a hook is what gets people to the book.

Thanks for letting me vent, whew.

  • Happiness Is...

Yesterday when I took a shower the door was ajar and the water poured out onto the scale. It is an electronic jobbie so it no longer works. My wife seemed a little heart broken because she and the scale have a daily visit. The fact is, my wife looks GREAT and her weight shouldn't have anything to do with how she feels about herself. Today I was thinking about that scale and a phrase popped into my head, 'happiness is... not having a scale.'

With this I wanted to throw this out to our Biznik community/family. I want to know what makes you happy. We all want to know what makes you happy. So please take a quick moment to finish this sentence.

    Happiness is...

  • Three Little Birds Sitting On A Wire

Picture three little birds sitting on a telephone wire. Two of them decide to fly away... how many birds are left?

The answer is three little birds are left on the wire. A 'decision' like a goal or plan does not take flight until it is coupled with action.

This little riddle was meant for a chuckle for some, a reminder for others and a kick in pants for a couple of us. I meant it as a conversation starter.

If there is something you feel you can help other Bizniks with please post it here in addition to your profile.

There are lots of people here on Biznik who can help you take flight with your ideas and desires. Look around and see who can help you get to your next big thing.

  • Funny Emails

We all get funny emails so I figured I'd share one my wife sent my way to make me laugh:

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. Hearing a thud, the widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife Subject: I've arrived Date: October 16, 2007

I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I've seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

    Your loving husband

P.S. Sure is freaking hot down here.

  • Kudos For Biznik

Two years ago when I did a search for 'Jeff Collins' on Google (42,400 results) I couldn't find a reference to myself in the first 200 pages (2000 results). My own website couldn't even be found. With a little effort I made it into the first 50 pages (500 results) as of one year ago. At about that time I started using Biznik.

Since then I have done a little more online networking & blogging and you can find me as 'Jeff Collins' on each of the first 9 pages of Google’s results. As an active, & perhaps paying, Bizniker there is a reference to me from Biznik on the second search results page in the in the 15th spot. It is preempted only by two other results, my own website & LinkedIn which made it to the first page. To me this says a lot about this little community we are all helping build. It is ranking quite high in the search results. The Biznik team is really making things happen & they are to all our benefit. 'Jeff Collins' is a very common name & to see me at 15 in results when I was previously not seen on the web amazes me.

Also, most of us do not use the word Haberdasher on a daily basis but it is listed 208,000 times on Google searches. Via Biznik you can find me listed as a Haberdasher at #102 which is in the top one half of one percent of all listings. My website is found at #5; a spot that was very difficult to reach.

If you want to have results better than mine you might want to pay the $25/month to Biznik like I do then hire one of the experts here on Biznik who specialize in achieving great web results. That will save you A LOT of time.

  • Cell Phones & Business

It's a funny think how the older I get the further away I feel from current technology. Perhaps it's because I've given into the attitude of, 'what does it matter keeping up if it's only going to change again tomorrow.'

Currently I have a Samsung flip phone, that’s where this photo came from. It’s not the most technologically advanced phone ever, it only has 20 buttons. I got so sick of my Palm Treo three years ago because I kept hanging up on people when it touched my ear while I was talking. It doesn't sound like it's much better off nowadays as my cousin called me from Texas last week on his new Treo. We don't talk much and that day wasn't supposed to be an exception but he accidently dialed me when he brushed up against the phone screen. If that weren't enough after we talked he accidentally called me back. That's not a frustration I want to go through with my clients, "oh it's just my haberdasher dialing me from his pocket again."

With my friends and clients texting me at an unprecedented rate I feel it necessary to get something with a keyboard. But what phone? I think I'm going to take about 6 months to research my next new phone. That's when T-Mobile says they'll chip in to buy it if I sign up for a longer contract. I saw phones on ebay this weekend so that is an option. My friend Sunny from www.techlab102.com sells & repairs cell phones so I’ll be sure to talk with him as well.

I want to be informed when I buy so I know I’m getting the right phone for what I do. Another friend/client of mine has a phone that syncs throughout the day with his computer and his truck so no matter where he is he knows where he’s supposed to be. I was thinking he must have a Cadillac truck or something but he told me it is a Honda Ridgeline & it greets him with a review of his schedule in the morning. I like that idea.

After about 6 months of frustration I tossed my Palm in the garbage & started writing my schedule on paper again, but in today’s world that is no longer an option. Now I want a phone that will work with my haberdashering. The options are endless… which phone is right for me?

I talked to someone about buying one of those unlocked Apple phones one Ebay. I was told they would work fine on a network besides AT&T but if I wanted to do any online updates then Apple would relock the phone.

So again I ask, ‘which phone?’ Anyone?

  • Management 101

Anyone here have employees? I remembered today a little pearl of wisdom a great manager shared with me.

He demonstrated it when someone in our organization came up to him in a panic to ask what they should do about a puzzling situation.

    1) 'What are your options?' he inquired.

She then gave a list of things that she could do to remedy the situation.

    2) 'Which do you think you should do?' He then asked her.

She thought for a moment & told him which option she thought would work best.

Then he said, 'okay, let's do that,' and he sent her on her way to solve the problem. This was his way of empowering her. I guarantee it didn't take her too many times of asking him questions like this to realize she already had the answers within her.

The following week I came up to him and asked him a question about what I should do. He asked me, 'what are your options?' I smiled, turned around and went off to solve the problem on my own.

Over the years I have found this to be a good two point check list for solving problems in business. Hopefully it helps you and yours as well.

p.s. try it on your kids!

  • Franchises

My friend Phyllis Pieri has been in the franchising industry for decades. She now works as an independant consultant helping people discover whether or not openning or buying a franchise would be right for them and if so, which one. She does not charge for a consultation because the franchise pays her if she is able to find a match.

I recently sent her an invitation to join Biznik so hopefully she joins soon. If you have any questions about franchises you can ask her at ppieri@matchpointnetwork.com. She is a wonderful person.

  • Internet Networking, well 'posting' at least

When I first joined Biznik I really didn't know what I was getting into. Most of us didn't but like many of you I have been pleasantly surprised at the community that has been built at the computer and in person at Biznik events.

When you first sign on to a networking site the most you can hope for is another place to put up your story; a way for someone to stumble upon you. Biznik is definitely different. First of all, to date, it is the only online community where I have generated revenue results. On other sites I've reconnected with old friends or made business relationships with 'potential.'

I thought it could be helpful to a couple of you if we put together a list of sites for you to 'post' your information to create those 'potential' relationships. Perhaps you can help us out by adding one or two I missed:

ecademy fast pitch linkedin meetup myspace friendster ryze spoke xing ziggs zoodango zoominfo

I'm not going to endorse any of these saying they will give you results, only that as a business person and having a company with a website it can be good to get your name out there. You never know how someone is going to find you.

  • Business Networking Article

Here's a very poignant article I read from Ivan Misner about building relationships through networking. I thought it would be good to share so we call all take a look at how and why we do what we do here on Biznik and at the events we attend.

-"When you tell entrepreneurs that relationships are the key to developing a personal and professional network, they often smile and acknowledge the concept without fully appreciating it. Let me put this notion into perspective.

Imagine you're standing in a large room full of people, and I ask everyone to pull out their key rings. Visualize everyone holding up the keys to their house, their office and their car as I ask everyone to show them to the room.

Now here’s my question: Would you hand over your car keys to a perfect stranger? What about those to your office or home? Of course not!

Now instead of a key to a car or a home, imagine you have a key that opens the door to an important relationship with a colleague that another person would like to connect with. Let’s say you hold the key to this relationship, but you don’t know the person who's asking for it. Would you give it to them? Of course not! Why? Because when you give a referral, you give away a piece of your reputation. If it's a good referral, it helps your reputation; if it's a bad referral, it hurts. Intuitively, you'll only hand over the keys to someone you know and trust.

What I love about this metaphor is how it works on two levels. First, you’re not going to hand over the keys to a relationship until you know a person well. But more important, others don’t even know what keys you actually have until you trust them enough to tell them.

It's not just you; nobody is willing to hand over the keys to important relationships until they know and trust the person asking. Unfortunately, when networking, some people expect perfect strangers to hand over the keys right away.

Take a look at your referral partners. Would it surprise you if they had keys to referrals they're keeping in their pockets until they trust you with them? It shouldn’t. So how do we begin this process of exchanging keys?

It all comes down to establishing credibility with your referral partners. I've seen many people who think networking is about meeting people and asking for business right then and there. That’s it. They meet someone and focus on telling them what they need or what kind of business they want. It’s like saying, “Hello, my name is Ivan. Let’s do business.”

Effective networking is about building relationships with others who can refer you once they've come to trust you, have confidence in you and feel loyal to you. This truly is the key to networking success. And this process takes time. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme.

If there were a single networking concept I had to identify that most entrepreneurs just don’t get, it would be building relationships over time. They listen, acknowledge its importance, then ask about the best way to close a deal when meeting someone for the first time. The short answer is, you don’t. OK, everyone has that one fluke story about meeting someone for the first time and ending up doing business, but that’s not the norm. The norm in successful networking is building a relationship to generate long-term referrals.

I think you'll be astonished at how powerful this concept is when put into action. Think of it this way: When you get to the place where you can, without hesitation, hand over your physical set of keys to someone, you'll be in the best place possible to begin asking for keys to their relationships."

For me, this article is about getting to really know one another & giving first, then receiving.

  • Welcome To Biznik

I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know Biznik has really worked well for my business. After Kevin Selkowitz told me about it in November 2006 I spent 6 months considering creating a profile. After I created a profile in April I left it alone for 4 months. About 1 to 3 people visited my profile every week.

Then I decided to start participating. I looked around at all of the interesting people and businesses. I read and wrote about topics in the Biz Talk pages and I met quite a few professionals with whom I exchanged Biznik messages. After one week my profile was being viewed by 50+ people a week and I began to schedule appointments to meet professionals from my local Biznik community.

Biznik has been really fun and at $0-$25/month it's hard to beat the return on investment. I enjoy the people and the camaraderie.

If you are looking at Biznik without having created a profile, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Don't waist 6 months thinking about it like I did.

  • Web Designer Needed In Our Bellevue Group

Recently our web designer was forced to leave our LeTip group in Bellevue. We are really sad to see him go but his business got too big to keep coming to our weekly meeting as he was busy traveling the world. During September our group of 40 local professionals will be interviewing web designers to take that seat. Only one person per category is allowed to join so we will hopefully find the best candidate. If you would like to visit please let me know and we'll buy you breakfast one of the Fridays in September when you check us out.

His company did a great job so not everybody will be signing up with you right away but we do look forward to building a relationship. Certainly some of the smaller businesses will enjoy someone who can pay attention to their growing companies .

A long time Bizniker, Kevin Selkowitz, built our group's site and you can find it at www.letipbellevue.com
