  • When on the phone I like to use the line, "I know you already have a good source for your visual marketing but I thought I might be a good second option for you." Of course you still have to close on meeting them but it is a good lead in. It makes them feel smart that they do have a good source already and the fact that you acknowledge that means you are smart and probably deserve to be heard out. Or it makes them feel silly for not having a good source and they should probably listen to what you have to say because is sounds like having one of 'you' is a necessity.

Find out who you need to talk with an ask for them by first name. It will more easily get you through screeners. Ask for Matt not Matthew or Mr. Smith if you find out Matthew Smith is the person you need to talk with, unless you know they prefer to be addressed this way.

Bonus Tidbit: Do not start the conversation by asking how they are unless they ask you. For some reason cheesy salespeople always do this and it sets people on the defense. (you'll notice it now that I mention it)

There were a couple other things I wanted to say but I've already surpassed my rule of two in this exerpt. Thanks for letting us help.

  • The Suit Is Back... And This Time It's On Sale!!! Due to a downturn in the economy suit sales are starting to take off. That's right when times are tight you have to look your best to get the job or persuade the client to work with you. Wearing your lawn cutting clothes to work aren't going to cut it in a competitive work climate.

Your personal image opens or closes many doors. Present yourself professionally and you'll find those doors wide open. You must look successful to be seen that way. In realizing this, my suit factory has made dressing well even more affordable.

I still get this, Dan. Is it one of those 'working on it' things? Or is it IE

  • Maybe you should start a third, this is awfully long as well.

So I found the new community search thing. 1) it puts me in the Nantong community as my default 2) it says there are people in the clothing-fashion industry in Seattle but when I click on it it then says there is no one in the results. It works for other industries. 3) when I clicked on the bottom of the page that said "share what you need" it sends me to Steve Young's profile.

  • The page number trick is no help if you go to page 12, look at someone's profile & have to hit the back button. It simply sends you to page 1. I have this issue with Firefox and IE.

Thank you for looking into this, Dan.

  • My girls are 3 and 5 now and dress themselves most of the time. The 5 year old has it down and is very concerned with matching (most of the time). The three year old enjoys asserting herself and saying no to any option given so usually I have to tell her something is too pretty and cannot be worn before she will want to try it out.

  • I was happy to point him in the right direction. His son, Grant, almost died in his home last year. While Grant's mother saved his life with CPR and a call to 911, an AED would have been a very helpful tool to bring him back.

  • Nancy,

Great article. I have used a couple of these techniques myself. Recently I've been asked quite a few times to be the expert on men's fashion. This link is one of them that I accepted.

Having written a press release myself, I can see how for future press releases it would be helpful to gain advice from someone like yourself who knows what the public and press want to hear. The list you recommended is a good source for potential topics but I think most of us need more assistance with content. How long should it be, how should it be written how much information should we share; stuff like that.

  • Maybe I'm wrong but to me, in an interview, "communication and presentation skills," are almost the same thing which, if true, would make your personal appearance #2!

Excellent article, Darcey. I whole heartedly agree.

In many situations I have had clients who I have got on the right path of professional dress and they ask me what to do with their employees. In many of those situations I have helped them create company logo wear. This has gone a long way to employees feeling more professional at work. Not only does it present a better image for their business than each employee wearing whatever they want, it also brands and advertises at the same time.

One of my clients landed a contract with Safeco & Quest fields because the right person noticed him in his company shirt I had made.

It goes to show it doesn't always have to be a suit but it does have to be professional.

If you want the lead role you better dress the part.

  • I have brought a dozen people to meet the man. One of my friends was putting tabasco on his sandwich when Porter yelled at him, "Boy, put that ketchup down." My friend soon met the man and was sweating profusely.

Another gentleman I brought was from Africa where he had grown up eating spicy food. Porter came over to our table and after I declined saying I never wanted to meet the man again, he put a dabble on my friend's sandwich. My friend told him to keep it coming. Porter put down a spoonful. My friend beckoned for more. He got another spoonful. When my friend told him to keep it coming, Porter slapped on a third spoonful in disbelief as if he had never been challenged before.

When my friend mixed it all in and took a big bite without being fazed in the least Porter almost bowed down. It was as if he had met a kindred spirit. My friend soon had his pin on the map. That was quite a day.

I think you have an excellent point here, Howard. Live dialog requires you to think on your feet while actively taking in information. Writing can be edited and perfected over time. Certainly face to face interaction poses more of a challenge.

  • Giannina,

I think it is good to interview a couple agents when deciding who to go with. I really like Krista Michelman because

    1. She's nice
    2. She knows what she is doing
    3. She is independent & therefore can shop around for you
    4. She doesn't sell minimum policies, she sells insurance for those who want to actually be covered when something happens.

Something like your situation, a home based business, might be best covered by standard insurance. She may think you need an umbrella policy so you might consider that in addition or perhaps business coverage in which case you would need a specialist like the one Krista referred me to at Silvermark.

    Krista is at krista@michelmaninsurance.net 425.398.1234 http://michelmaninsurance.net

-best of luck with the repairs

  • I would like to know more as well. My hosting company is fine, $25 a month. But they are too big for me to refer business to. They do the big guns now; they just landed a deal with National Goegraphic & have done work for the UN. So I can't say, "you should talk to my guy," to just anyone anymore.
