  • Self-Promotion the Social Way

My article, "Self-Promotion the Social Way," was recently published in the October issue of the design publication HOW Magazine - with a mention of Biznik. Today the piece went live on the magazine website. While the article was written for an audience of creative types, I do think it includes information of value for any business.

  • Clowning around...

Biznikers who happen to be in Portland over the next few days have several opportunities to view my alter-ego "Toots Caboose" in action. Going to clown school was a blast and I'm having the time of my life.

Today (06.03), "Toots" and his Character Clown Corps cohorts will be strutting their stuff in the Fred Meyer Junior Rose Parade. Saturday morning is the Key Bank Grand Floral Parade, which will be televised in many parts of the country. On Saturday, "Toots" will be a judge for the costume contest at the Portland Rose Festival Waterfront Village. In a couple weeks, a contingent of the Clown Corps will participate in the Portland Pride Parade as the Stumptown Clowns.

"Toots Caboose" has become a great extension of my Jeff Fisher LogoMotives brand. Both print and broadcast media have reported on the activities of the Amtrak Cascades Character Clown Corps - including an appearance at Portland's Union Station for National Train Day. My design business has received some great exposure as well. The train-related connection between LogoMotives and Amtrak Cascades has not gone unnoticed.

Recently, a social media agency in Toronto contacted me - due to my blogging, writing, social network participation and clowning - and asked if I would be interested in test driving a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid for a few a days. I will be blogging, tweeting and posting social network updates about my test drive as I clown around, and speak about social networking at the Healthcare Communicators of Oregon Conference in Springfield OR, over the next few days.

Stepping outside of my comfort zone to become a clown has become a great addition to my business marketing/promotion.

I hope I see some of you along the parade routes this week!

  • I'm going to clown school!

I recently learned that I have been accepted in the "clown school" program to be a participant in the Amtrak Cascades Character Clown Corps for the 2009 Portland Rose Festival. The clown program will be taught by professional clown Angel Ocasio.

Part of the reason I submitted my application for the program is that participating in such an activity is so extremely out of my comfort zone. I do think the experience will help me in many of my business activities - especially my growing number of public speaking opportunities. Besides, it should be a lot of fun.

Today I posted my first bLog-oMotives entry about my new adventure. As things progress I will provide updates.

I'm excited about being a genuine clown - and in the future, when people call me a "clown" I can respond that I really am!

  • Twitter for promoting your book

Author and cyber pal Kristen Fischer has written the article "Using Twitter to Promote Your Book" for the site FreelanceSwitch.com. Thought I'd share the link with the Biznik community. I also posted an "Identity Crisis!" blog entry about the article.

  • A vacation break to say "howdy"

I'm currently on my annual two-week vacation to the island of St. Croix. Having the phone lines at the house our for the past week has not necessarily a bad thing. Every two or three days we visit the home of some friends, living on the island with working WiFi, to check emails and touch base with the "real" world.

It's been great recharging the batteries, napping a lot, reading books (I'm on my sixth in the past week) and basking in the art of doing nothing. I've also spent some time beginning to write my latest book - by the pool with a rum drink at hand.

Just popping in to say "howdy!" Hope all is well with all Biznikers.

  • Pick up the Feb. 2009 issue of Entrepreneur

The February 2009 issue of Entrepreneur magazine hit the newsstands yesterday. The special report is "Laid Off?: Start a Business in '09" and I'm featured as an "expert" in the "Marketing Makeovers" article. The major national exposure is due to Help A Reporter Out (HARO) and writer Gwen Moran.

I originally responded to a HARO request as a possible submitter of examples of business makeovers. Ms. Moran suggested that instead, as the author of the book "Identity Crisis!: 50 Redesigns That Transformed Stale Identities into Successful Brands," she would like me to be one of the experts commenting on the makeovers of others.

Now it's time for me to start "tooting!" about the incredible publicity. I'd recommend that all Biznik members sign-up to receive the HARO email updates of reporter/writer requests. The Entrepreneur article opportunity is just one with which I've had success in responding to reporter/writer requests through HARO.

Wishing you all the best in 2009!

(NOTE: If/when the Entrepreneur article is posted online I will share the link.)

  • Aloha all!

I got out of Portland, via Seattle, and to the Kona Coast earlier Sunday morning. Staying at an incredible house near Captain Cook for a couple weeks and the weather is gorgeous. Hoping everyone on Biznik is staying safe and warm, as we continue to check on friends and family back home to make sure all are well.

A cacophony of roosters wakes me each morning here at about 5:00 AM - so, I get up and do a couple hours of work before the sun rises. I've spent much of the past two days napping in the sun - must have needed the mental and physical vacation It's all part of my eliminating geographically boundaries to my work. The plan is to be living in a tropical climate, possibly here on the Big Island, half of the year and in Portland most of the rest.

Raising a rum drink poolside in a happy holidays message to you all. Mele Kalikimaka!

  • I'm a cartoon character...

Some of you may be familiar with the illustrations and cartoons of Lloyd Dangle - especially his work for the Airborne products packaging. Recently Dangle and I were both speakers at the first Creative Freelancer Conference. As I wrote on bLog-oMotives, Dangle had his sketchpad ready throughout the conference. It's fun to have been immortalized as a cartoon character and Dangle has posted a set of his conference cartoons on Flickr.

  • You never know where your blog entries will end up...

In addition to the topics of design, branding, identity design and marketing, the posts on bLog-oMotives often include mentions related to my passion (and therapy) of gardening. A couple weeks ago I blogged about making a garden umbrella stand out of a flowerpot. Late this past week the post appeared on the site Apartment Therapy.

It's brought a lot of traffic to my blogs, and blogfolio, and even one request for a bid on a logo project. In a way my garden-related posts have become a subtle marketing tool for my design business.

  • HOW Design Conference, Boston - May 18-21?

With over 3000 design professionals in attendance, I would assume some biznikers may be at the annual HOW Design Conference in Boston. Please track me down and say "hi!"

I will once again be speaking at the conference. My session, "Planning, Packaging & Promoting Yourself as the Product," on Tuesday afternoon, will take a look at the challenges faced by graphic designers in marketing their own services.

I will be signing copies of "Identity Crisis: 50 Redesigns That Transformed Stale Identities into Successful Brands" Tuesday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the HOW Conference Book Store.

Hope to see you there! - J.

  • Appropriate Biz Talk section for a non-biznik event?

Next week, here in Portland, there's a book signing event for my new book. I'd like to invite area biznik members to stop by and introduce themselves if they are in the neighborhood. Is there an appropriate place in Biz Talk to post events not specifically sponsored by biznik? Thanks!

  • Jeff Fisher is having an "Identity Crisis!"

Well...not me, personally. I'm Jeff Fisher, the Engineer of Creative Identity for the Portland-based design firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives, and my new book "Identity Crisis!: 50 Redesigns That Transformed Stale Identities Into Successful Brands," is being released by HOW Books this week.

It was great to log in to biznik this morning and see a post about my book on the home page, in my friend Ilise Benun's column "Indie biz tips from Marketing Mix."

    Have a great day! - J.
