What Jim does

University of Michigan Medical School alumnus James Murtagh commenced his career in the medical field as a Resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. Dr. James "Jim" Murtagh went on to take a Pulmonary Fellowship at the University of Michigan. From 1986 to 2001, Dr. Jim Murtagh focused primarily on Pulmonology, holding numerous positions with establishments such as the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health and dual appointments at Atlanta VA Medical Center and Grady Memorial Hospital. While working at Grady, Dr. Jim Murtagh made a number of valuable contributions, such as launching an ICU ethics program, instituting ICU Computer Education, and establishing a Sleep Program. In 2003, Dr. Jim Murtagh began to shift his focus to sleep medicine as the Medical Director for SleepCor Sleep Centers of Southeast Georgia. Dr. Jim Murtagh has also held a multitude of academic appointments throughout his career, including Director of the Core Facility of Molecular Biology for Emory University School of Medicine and VA Medical Center, Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases at Emory University, Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy for Atlanta VA Medical Center, and most recently as a tenured Associate Professor for the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Jim Murtagh is dedicated to the cause of scientific advancement and has received numerous research grants totaling over $2 million. Dr. Jim Murtagh currently practices pulmonology at VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Additionally, Dr. Jim Murtagh is an editor for two online publications: "OpEdNews" and "Medical Tuesday." Dr. James Murtagh maintains memberships in numerous prestigious medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Federation of Clinical Research, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Advisory Board of the Boehringer-Mannheim Corporation. An accomplished author and public speaker, Dr. James Murtagh has often been called upon to contribute his expertise to medical articles, books, and conventions.
