Dr. Burleigh's thirty-four year career in the field of audiology has focused on teaching, research and administration in areas of clinical audiology, pediatric audiology, and central auditory processing disorders in children and adults.

She has served as a clinical audiologist, researcher, and director of three auditory centers, educator, national speaker, entrepreneur, author, and inventor. She has served as a clinical audiologist, researcher, and director of three auditory centers, educator, national speaker, entrepreneur, author, and inventor. She has been involved in the field of central auditory processing disorders since 1974, researching areas such as behavioral manifestations, evaluation procedures and management for children and adults with central auditory nervous system dysfunction.

Until her retirement in 2005, she served as a Senior Research Scientist/ Scholar in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Director of the Center for Central Auditory Research at Colorado State University.

Dr. Burleigh continues her pioneering work in research in establishing the research/clinical operations of the Central Auditory Research Center and the Central Auditory Diagnostic Center, and creating the Able Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization she co-founded.

The Able Kids Foundation utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and leading research initiatives to provide solutions for individuals with disabilities. Recently, Joan Burleigh, as the Chief Executive Officer, led the development of the Able Kids Foundation's latest public service campaign, the I AM ABLE(tm) Initiative.
