Owners Transform Family-run Mansion into Kirkland’s Best Place to Live for Aging Loved Ones!
Kirkland, WA - It is said that, “When times are tough, the tough get going.” Shumway Mansion a former Reception Center and Bed & Breakfast Inn, historic landmark, celebrating its 100th year Anniversary, has operated as a family-run business the last 24 years. When times got tough, the family sold off surrounding property to developers. They had also planned on selling the mansion itself but after several real estate deals fell through, the owners, Dick and Salli Harris, discovered yet another great entrepreneurial venture had presented itself—to transform this 100 year old Mansion into an adult family home.
When the nay sayers, including the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) warn that the recession “may force widespread economic failure,” the Harris family is seizing the opportunity where it still exists and creating a new enterprise that will serve the Kirkland community for years to come. Shumway Mansion Adult Family Home will now continue to serve the community that has supported them these last 24 years by opening a place for aging loved ones.
The Harris family including their son , Ken Harris, son-in-law Mark Sullens and daughters and daughter-in-law, Julie Blakemore, Janet Sullens and Laurie Harris, will run operations, cook meals and deliver the caregiving. The now grown grand-children will also add a cross-generational atmosphere. concierge services, custom painting of rooms to match a residence taste and a private shopper will provide extra special services not offered by other adult family homes. The proximity to Juanita Beach Park, Juanita Bay Park and Juanita Village, a small local mall, make the prime location of Shumway Mansion Adult Family Home one of Kirkland’s best places to live.
Julie Blakemore, daughter to the Harris family is the Provider and Culinary Chef. Her lifetime experience of caring for those around her and developed culinary skills, as Chef to the Shumway Mansion Bed & Breakfast for the last two dozen years, make Julie Blakemore a perfect fit to care for the day to day needs of the residents providing both eye-appealing and mouth-watering meals.
After their first five rooms are occupied, plans are already underway to complete a second floor. A Small Business Administration (SBA) loan plus well over 200 collective years of experience makes Shumway Mansion’s Adult Family Home a sure win.
