  • What do indy businesses offer better than bigger businesses?

We discussed this in our recent biz nik event and some of the comments were: Better customer service and accountability.

What do you offer that is better quality because you are small compared to a big company that offers a similar service?

    Good question???

  • How can a small group of indy business work together and make a difference in our local communities?

A wonderful group of us got together yesterday at our Portland event. We had a great time and also looked at some thought-provoking questions. One of those was about how working together can make a difference.

One outcome was an awareness of what a coalition of small business can accomplish. One example is the Saturday Market, the Farmers Markets, the neighborhood art walks - all of which are comprised of small businesses who together make a big impact. What are other ways you have seen this done or could see it done? What is the value?

  • Money Issues?

Do you get stressed about money? Do you ever stay awake worrying about how you will pay your mortgage, your employees, your electric bill?

Money seems to cause more stress for business owners than anything else!

I know it has for me and my approach was avoidance for a long time. I finally realized that avoidance was only avoiding myself! So jumped in and looked at my fears and am no longer avoiding it! In fact I say, "bring it on."

I am offering an audio class on this topic called Money and the Flow of business. It starts next week. I have a program I have put together and I would also love to hear from you about your money issues and solutions. Thanks for sharing. Kaya

  • A new "Aha"

I woke up one day last week and had an “aha”moment. Sometimes I am baffled at how this whole process works of “waking up.” How do you know what you don’t know and how can you find out what you don’t know if you don’t know you don’t know it?

My new awareness ( well not really new but a new awareness of an older awareness) is "that it is not about what I need from the world," but it is all about "what does the world need from me?"

This changes the whole concept of the way I do my business. This idea eliminates comparison, competition and judgment as we each have a unique "something" that the world needs. What do you think?

  • A new publishing opportunity

I just found out about a great opportunity to get published at a low cost. I just joined as it looks like good. It is a a new site to promote your publications so I am not totally sure yet but you might want to check it out:

    Go to: http://www.youpublish.com/referredby/kayasinger

This new web site allows you to publish any file (book, music, audios, videos, photographs, spreadsheets, software, whatever) and to share it for free or to sell it at a price that you set. It looked good to me so I am passing it on.

Right now, YouPublish is in a private launch phase where authors and creators can register and upload their creations to fill the store so that when the site publicly launches in May, users will find a variety of works to choose from.

If you are a writer or other creative type give it a look.

if any of you already know about this I would appreciate your comments. Kaya

  • Do you get bogged down?

Do you tend to get bogged down in the "work" of your business? Sometimes I find it hard to carve out the time to look at my business vision, strategic planning etc. even though I know how important it is. I schedule days at the beach every so often and go with another entrepreneur friend so we can do some of that work together mixed in with walks in the sand.

I am wondering what you all do. I teach a Business Design Workshop that people can come and do this together. It is amazing for the participants, however it doesn't offer that piece to me. I think an important part of it is being with other sharp business owners and doing the deep sharing and feedback and yet- it is hard to pull myself away from the "jobs" that need to be done everyday. How do you all deal with this issue?

  • Word Press Challenge

Can anyone help me with Word Press? I have a couple problems that I cannot seem to solve. I am not getting e-mail notifications when someone posts a comment. I have checked the box that says to notify me but I only get notified AFTER I have approved a comment. It is supposed to notify me that there is a comment waiting for moderation. The next thing is that after my article it does not say "comment". I have seen the word "comment" written in large letters on other people's blogs so I know it is possible. Kaya

I would appreciate any help. My blog is awakeningbusiness.com/blog

  • Looking for a techie class for oldies

I am wanting to take a class to learn basic html code and how and where to put things on my web page. I have a content management system I use to edit text, add pages etc. What I need is to understand how the code works. For instance I signed up for an affiliate site and they gave me a couple lines of code and said " add this to your home page." It feels like foreign world to me. I chatted with a 24 year old yesterday about this and asked her how she learned this stuff and she said, " I don't know. its just what we all did in high school." Similar to us cruising the burger joints in our T-bird- suppose.

Does anyone else have this need and is there a class out there for people over age 50 to transplant coding DNA in our brains. I don't want an online class as I need to be able to ask questions and get help. Thanks for any ideas. (preferably in Portland) Kaya

  • What is a good e-mail/ data base service

My son is in a band and they have a data base of about 3,000 names and growing. They don't need auto-responders but they do need a service to store their contacts and be able to do broadcast e-mails a few times per month. People sign up on paper at their gigs so they want to be able to add the names in without people having to opt in and verify. Any ideas?
