What Keith does
As a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor® and former "COO", I provide customized, in-person, and one-on-one training, tutoring, classes, instruction, seminars, private lessons, and online and telephone help at your pace and skill level based on what you know (or don't) at your office, my place, or coffee or tea shop in Greater Seattle or elsewhere by arrangement.
Why fight traffic to attend a class and go at the slowest person's pace (yawn) (and do you really want to ask delicate questions about your business in front of others) when I will come to you?
Learn how to effectively use QuickBooks Simple Start, Pro, Premier, or Enterprise, or Quicken for (Windows or Mac) to properly set up your financial records so you can fish (or make Tofu if you are a vegan) for yourself, save on accountant's fees, stop worrying, and sleep better at night.
There is nothing more fun than watching someone's eyes light up as they gain the self-confidence by making their financial or accounting software work for them instead of the other way around and learn how to produce financial reports that tell them how their business or investment and retirement plans are really doing.
And so they don't make the mistakes several of my small business clients made by (1) creating their chart of accounts for a C corporation when they were a LLC which screwed up their tax accounting; (2) setting up their credit card as an expense account instead of as a credit card; (3) setting up their vendors as customers and vice versa; (4) recording all their payments individually instead of matching them up with the actual bank deposit; and not updating their version of the program.
Do you need someone to set up or check your business or start up's chart of accounts, financial records, or books? Have you slowly come to the realization that you don't know how to use your accounting software and it is affecting your bottom line? Has your company grown to the point where it would be nice to have someone come in on a regular basis to train, tutor, and instruct you and your staff in QuickBooks and help them convert from Peachtree®, or Microsoft Small Business Accounting or their new Office Accounting Express® to do your bookkeeping and financial reports and let you make more money by doing what you really enjoy doing?
Or would you rather sit in the dark?
Well, let me come to you if you live nearby so you can show me your business or bring your friendly laptop for coffee at an independent coffee shop near me and chat for 30 minutes about what I can do for you, wht might be your best choice of financial management software - sometimes the answer may surprize you) and to bounce ideas off of. You’ve hired an attorney, accountant, insurance broker, business coach, SEO expert, marketing pro, and others to help you start and manage your business.
Shouldn’t you hire someone to teach you how to effectively use the accounting software that you’ll be relying on to discover how well you are (or aren’t) doing?
As someone who has been a bookeeper and ran the day to day aspects of a medium sized business, I can help you learn to solve some of the following common accounting and bookkeeping software issues and problems:
- Help you pick the right QuickBooks program (there are five plus many sub categories) for your business and converting company files from other software programs such as Peachtree, Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and Quicken (and get QuickBooks for you at up to 20% off retail as well as free trial copies if you want to use it to keep track of your common household expenses):
- Set-up your initial financial Chart of Accounts applicable to your business (something software can't personally provide) including bank, petty cash, employee advances, fixed assets and other assets, credit cards, loans, payroll, sales tax payable, and other liabilities, taxable and non taxable sales or services, fixed or nut expenses (the bills you have to pay every month) versus variable and setting up tax lines for most accounts to make it easier to file your income tax returns and save on your accountant's fees;
- Explain why your chart of accounts should be numbered and when you should use classes;
- Set up your accounting software for On-line Banking for real-time knowledge on where your account balances currently are at including some credit cards (unless you like to pay over limit and NSF fees);
- The proper way to record personal credit card charges and checks writtenso you can reimburse yourself;
- Show you how to turn on certain accounting preferences in QuickBooks related to your business;
- Establish correct service or inventory items, classes, and adjusting Inventory (and if you sell informing you why it is important to keep track of your shipping costs);
- Job Costing and Estimates (and explaining how to convert your estimates into an invoice);
- Bank, Petty Cash, Credit Card, and other Account Reconciliation;
- Bill and Credit Card Posting including matching up net credit card receipts to customer charges;
- Show you how to design your own customized Invoices or Sales Receipts with your company logo;
- Demonstrate the proper way to receive and deposit payments;
- Teach you how to set up and file your City & State B&O and Sales Taxes;
- Online Payroll and direct deposit through QuickBooks whether you are one employee, three, five, or 18;
- Use QuickBooks to prepare your Payroll Taxes and Forms (Unemployment, Worker’s Comp, & IRS) and pay them online;
- Filing and organizational advice to keep your financial and office files in shape (such as using color tabs for certain types of files such as green for customers, blue for vendors, etc.);
- Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year end management financial reports including profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow predictions, and who are your most profitable customers or job productivity.
My company is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business. I am a member of, the QuickBooks ProAdvisor Program, the Intuit (the folks who make TurboTax, Quicken, and QuickBooks (not Quick Books) to name a few products) Accountant's Inner Circle which advises the company on ways to improve their products (I recently found a bug in QuickBooks Pro 2008 and suggested a fix) and make them more consumer friendly (gasp!) and the Microsoft Professional Accountants' Network which helps users with Microsoft Office Accounting 2007 or 2008.
I recently spoke about "Ten Things You Need to Do to Set Up Your Start Up's Books Correctly" at the Six Hour Start Up Conference on Saturday, May 31, 2008. I also was the subject of an article Spotlight on a QuickBooks Instructor: Teaching Small Businesses to Fish on the TeachStreet Blog. TeachStreet is a web site that brings together local teachers and inquiring students.
I am available evenings and weekends if you work during the day as I remember what it is like to have a day job while trying to get a business off the ground. I am willing to travel throughout the Western Washington as that is what good customer service is all about.
I charge $295 for a three consecutive hour session at your place (I find that most people need that amount of time to adequately learn the program or have their company file checked or for me to do a basic set up) and $90 an hour thereafter so you can count dollars instead of sheep and learn how to fish (or make tofu if you are a vegan) for yourself. I also offer unlimited training for one year for one person in a company for QuickBooks Pro for $1195.
One other thing. Everyone in my network I have met personally, exchanged e-mails, had them comment on my posts or vice versa, or referred business to them. They are the kind of folks I would have no problem hugging in public. They represent an extension of my values.

What Keith does best
In my QuickBooks and Quicken tutor hat, I have been told that I am "very calm and patient") in explaining the best way to establish your company's books including using "tax lines" to make it easier to file your income taxes, how to use financial software effectively by adopting certain financial procedures, and working with frustrated business owners who want to learn how to use the program (or others) but feel lost, don't know if they are making money, or know their financial records are screwed up but are too embarassed to ask for help.
I don't judge. I have seen it all. You gain my respect by asking for help rather than hiding your head in the sand. Isn't that the way it should be?
In my business advisory hat, I can help you set up your new business in terms of infrastructure and getting you your business licenses and permits, filing for M/WBE Certification, and writing a business plan, obtain QuickBooks programs at 20% off, show you how to maintain your books, serve in an advisory board capacity to bounce ideas off of, create financial models and predictions in Excel, train or tutor you in specific software, assist you in marketing your company using personalized direct mail or email, write technical documents or manuals for your company, and assist you in basic web design and search engine optimization so your site can be found by your future customers.
What does Keith need?
Clients who need me to review what they have set up or done in QuickBooks or Quicken, set up their financial records accurately, or train them in the software so they can reduce their accountant's fees, and sleep at night.
Clients who want to generate accurate financial reports for loans and themselves by learning one-on-one or in-person at their office how to make QuickBooks work for them instead of the other way around or being bored in a class, or try out some free basic bookkeeping software from Microsoft, QuickBooks, and sometimes Peachtree for their new business, most of which is fully functional with no time limits.
I expect my clients to understand the importance of learning how to effectively use their bookkeeping, accounting, and personal financial management software such as QuickBooks and Quicken to name a few more effectively so they can find out how well they are doing (and what they need to do to improve their business and stay on top of and track of their finances.)
First, within the Biznik community, I want to be known as Mr. QuickBooks or "Senor Libros Aprisa" in Spanish (as one member called me) or "Doctor QuickBooks" "I make house calls to teach you how to fish for yourself or fix your financial aches and pains."
I'm the member you call when you want to install QuickBooks for the first time and get it done right, have your financial records, chart of accounts, and bookeeping practices reviewed or checked up on a regular basis (think of me as a financial doctor), and to learn how to effectively use QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Accounting software, Quicken, Money and other financial management programs as well as a business advisor you can bounce ideas off of.
Most of us would go in for a physical before running a marathon. Nor would we start exercising before starting an exercise routine by not consulting with a trainer. Shouldn't you do the same before starting or gearing up your business to take off?
Second, I would like to form partnership and alliances with businesses who come into contact with people who are setting up their new business or start ups as well as businesses that have been in existence between one and five years.
These include attorneys, accountants, printers (need stationery and business cards right?), financial advisors, merchant credit card account providers, commercial real estate agents, bankers (need to open an business checking and credit card account so you can do online banking in your accounting software, (right?), tap into that home equity, or plan for the future when you expand and need the capital), venture capitalists, marketing gurus, business advisors, web site designers, telephone service providers, and personal organizers.
Third, I would like to trade my time for marketing, click through, web design, and PR services, a AT&T or T-Mobile Bluetooth enabled cell phone (preferable unlocked), a Dell or Apple laptop, an uninterruptable power supply with battery backup, Microsoft Office Professional 2007, Mission-Style furniture (couch, chair, tables), new kitchen cookware (Le Creuset or Caphalon?), 100% Egyptian? cotton Queen size sheets with a 300+ thread count to round out my sets.
Education
Completed two years of law school from 1984-1986 at Seattle University School of Law before escaping from the dark side of the force or is it the light side?
Bachelor's degree in General Studies with concentrations in Classics, Economics, ROTC (hey, I didn't want to get drafted and uniforms can be fun) and English, University of Iowa, 1977.
I self taught myself computer hardware and software after taking some basic courses in 1989 at North Seattle Community College while driving a school bus (and wanting to sell my passengers for medical experiments.)
Experience
Before starting this business in early 2003, I previously ran the day-to-day business operations of an 15-18 employee professional services company doing around $2 million a year in revenue and a 30% profit margin for two and one half years from 2000-2003.
During that time, I was invited to speak at my professional association's national convention about my experiences with QuickBooks. Unfortunately, the owner ended up filing for bankruptcy and so I had to find another boat to sail.
Before that fun position, I was a career temporary for seven years (1993-2000) for a majority of the temp slave firms in this area and was a real estate agent, apartment manager, VISTA volunteer for Solid Ground (formerly the Fremont Public Association and the Pike Place Senior Center), former nanny (or should I say nanno?), and as a patient collections representative for the UW and Harborview Medical Centers where I looked forward to writing off my charity care accounts each day so the patients could sleep at night.
I am a former securities (NASD and NYSE), real estate (was a buyers agent before it was required), car (lemon law), and BBB Arbitrator, served as the Chairperson of Seattle Animal Control Commission, served on the boards of Seattle Mental Health, Youth Advocates, Atlantic Street Center, and other United Way agencies, and am listed in Who's Who in Finance and Business.
I currently repair the world by serving as a moderator for several Freecycle groups, manage two Yahoo! Group lists, on the advisory board for a 12,000 circulation monthly community newspaper, buy personal care items on rebate and donate them to FareStart, and comment frequently as a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor on the QuickBooks Forum for members of the QuickBooks Pro Advisor Community and the public.
For fun, I like to dine out using my Entertainment and Chinook Book two for one and 50% off coupons on dates or with friends, ride steam and dinner trains (the Spirit of Washington is moving to Tacoma in August 2007), visit historical towns like Port Gamble, Snohomish, Rosalyn, Steilacom, and Fairhaven, to name a few, hike without the ten essentials (smile) on the Silver Creek Trail by Index and the Old Robe Railroad Trail near Granite Falls, go on art walks (First Thursday downtown and Second Saturday in Ballard), and take my antique Nikkormat camera on scenic drives like the North Cascades Highway from Burlington to Wintrop.
I am currently in the process of closing a two bedroom plus condo in the Ravenna neighborhood (it has a creek running through it.)
