  • How to extract video from a DVD

We're not exactly sure if this is the place to post this kind of topic since BizTips no longer exists but we're going to give it a try. We hope it's helpful for some of you in the Biznik universe!

We've encountered many businesses that have existing video they want to re-purpose - the only problem is that the clip is on a video-DVD and they are unsure how to extract it.

Fortunately, a free program exists that will allow you extract video from a DVD that has already been made for you so you can burn it to a CD, simply store a digital copy on your computer, or upload to the internet to stream from your website. This only works with DVDs that are not copy-protected, so don't go and try copying the "We Are Not Alone" dance scene from the "Breakfast Club" DVD you keep hidden under your file cabinet.

MPEG Streamclip - it is a free application for both Mac OS X and Windows: http://www.squared5.com.

Once you have MPEG Streamclip installed, put the DVD into your computer. Open MPEG Streamclip and choose File > Open DVD. From there, navigate to the disc. On the DVD, there will be two folders, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. Choose the VIDEO_TS folder.

Now you can play through the footage and mark in and out points to isolate just the chunk you want - i and o are the keyboard shortcuts for this.

Go back to the File menu, and you'll notice how many export options you have - from H.264 Quicktime files (a great file-type for making relatively light files while retaining decent quality) to DV streams (if you wanted to perform additional edits on the footage) to MPEG-4...and more, if you're feeling spunky.

Make sure, no matter which format you choose, that you check the "De interlace video" option in your export settings - this will ensure that your clip doesn't have any distracting horizontal jaggies.

The faster your machine, the faster the next step will go, but within a few minutes you should have an easily movable digital copy of the footage you need!

Drag it to a thumb-drive to give to your business partner, burn it to a CD for clients, or add it to your website for the world to see.

Now...close your door, turn up your speakers and do the Molly Ringwald.

Lastly, if you don't really feel like doing it yourself, or if it's not behaving the way it should, feel free to give us a call - we're happy to help!
