    A few thoughts:

    1. Stories don't have to be long-winded. Just a few sentences can make a huge difference. Start with a brief story (one that shows how you handled a situation that is relevant to the position you're applying for). Then offer a brief summary of your skills.
    2. The place for skills information is the resume.
    3. Cover letters are about what you can do at the new job, and a story is a great way to show that. Resumes are about what you've done in the past.

    If this style isn't right for you, go with the one that is. But sometimes it's important to be uncommon.
