  As a QuickBooks Trainer, I setup companies in QuickBooks, Peachtree, Microsoft SmallBusiness Accounting, and Accounting Express. I am frequently asked by new and existing small business owners, and entrepreneurs thinking of starting their own business, if I can recommend a book for them to read (and stay awake) on accounting. They want to understand bookkeeping concepts, how to organize new and existing business files, what I am doing for them, the financial records the programs can generate; and they want to use that knowledge to effectively communicate with their expensive accountant or bookkeeper.

  I tell them that if they want to effectively work with me (or any other bookkeeper or their accountant), make their accounting software work for them (instead of the other way around) and get their money's worth, Radical Accounting is the best book. Its written in plain English, and will show them a way out of their financial and organizational darkness and into the light of understanding and profitability. I tell them its important to keep score financially. You keep track of your ad responses, should you not do the same for your business operations? It is a book that I have learned from as well.

  For one client, with six months worth of unopened mail and many bills, I used the organizational chapter to reorganize his office, files, and accounting structure. I setup online banking and downloaded six months of bank statements to bring him up to date.

  For a second client, I used the chapter on why companies should number their software's financial chart of accounts to explain to her how using numbered accounts would allow her to understand that accounts function, in which report the account belonged, and how the reports were interrelated. I taught her how to use the QuickBooks invoice feature to keep better track of who owed her money, and to appreciate how much her business was worth.

  For a third client, I streamlined his accounting system by using some tips from Radical Accounting to reduce the amount of time he was spending doing data entry. I had the accounting software automatically fill in the last transaction and amount when processing several hundred varying bills from vendors. I estimate that implementing that change alone will result in the company saving $100 in employee time this year alone. Thats a very good return on a $20 investment in buying the book.

  Therefore, if you are thinking of starting a new company, there are five things you should do before you obtain your business license.

  1. Read a Nolo Press book on forming a company.
  2. Read Radical Accounting.
  3. Find an attorney.
  4. Find an accountant.
  5. Chose between an S corporation, sole proprietorship, or partnership. And then find a consultant, like myself, who will help you setup your choice of accounting systems (because most accountants will not do that for you). That way you will not do what one client did. He setup an LLC as a C corporation, and created the wrong chart of accounts for his business.

  I am so excited about Madeline's book Radical Accounting. I've read it cover to cover twice, marking it up with stickies and margin notes, and had it open on my lap when I sat down in front of a brand new QB account to create my Chart of Accounts from scratch. The day it all clicked - when I finally got it - when the P&L became clear and it all made sense - I was jumping up and down. I've been self employed for 8 years and until I read her book I thought my Chart of Accounts was just something I kept for my tax preparer so she'd know how much to deduct from my Schedule C. I wanted to understand more about how the finances affect my businesses, but I didn't know where to go to learn.

  Madeline's book literally landed in my lap. Dan found her online, invited her to present at the BizJam, and the complimentary copy that arrived in the mail sat on the kitchen counter for a few days before it fell off the counter, into my lap, and I decided to take a look. Now I recommend it to everyone who runs their own business. It's concise, to the point, and puts all the pieces together.
