  • Hi Rebecca,

So much will depend on your mindset, your long-term financial goals, the corporate culture at the firm you're considering, and very importantly, if you will miss the intangible [rush, joy, whatever] of dealing with clients one-on-one.

In practical terms, one full-time employment benefit that can't be minimized is health insurance. It is a nightmare to get open-market coverage that's comprehensive and reasonably priced. The employer 401K match, if there is one, ain't bad either.

It sounds like you have a good opinion of the company you're considering, so I'd suggest these negotiating points: first, see if they'll offer flex-time or telecommute options. If you find you're feeling creatively or financially constrained, and want to do some side-work, flex-time will make it easier. Also be sure that you understand the 401K match, and if available, find out your retirement fund investment options.

    Best wishes!

  • Hi Yvette,

Even in a bad market, there is always the need for basic services -- real estate sales, or in my case, IT services and programming. Ironically, lots of my contracting opportunities went south around 2001, when the stock market and IT went into free-fall, yet at that time I found a wonderful (and well-paying) client with lots of projects for me! So, please be optimistic. Opportunities and welcome income can show up even when it seems impossible.

Also: I am wondering if your current job would allow you a flex-time and/or telecommute arrangement. These can help a lot when trying to work and run a side-business concurrently.

    Best of luck to you!
