Great advice Angela. I think part of the lesson learned is that in order to truly be "the smartest person in the room" requires emotional intelligence.

Posted Sep 08, 2009 Seven Keys for Highly Effective Virtual Teams by Mark Craemer
Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for commenting on my article. I plan to write a follow up article or two and will go into more specifics on working together as a virtual team. With regard to appropriate technologies, much depends on the nature of your team. I believe that both synchronous (i.e., telephone, video, instant messaging) as well as asynchronous (i.e., email, file sharing, websites) methods should to be employed on any virtual team. Specific applications like Sharepoint can provide a great deal of virtual team capabilities. There are also many free or low-cost alternatives for communication (Skype), presentation (GoToMeeting), Project Management (Basecamp), and Calendar (Google), etc. Depending on your situation, you'll have to decide which makes the most sense.
Please look for my next post as I will get into another aspect of virtual teams.
Best,
Mark

Brian,
You're absolutely right. Too bad many organizations have gotten away from this "process ownership drives engagement" way of thinking as perhaps a response to these tough economic times.

Great article Steve. I too re-watched the movie, "What the Bleep . . .?" just this past weekend, in fact, and it is highly thought-provoking and insightful.
Perhaps due to Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power of Positive Thinking" I read as a teenager, but for whatever reason, I have embraced this way of thinking (accepting that I choose and influence my perception of the world around me) in spite of the hardships and challenges I face. I am hopeful that your article and upcoming workshop will help to broaden this perspective and improve many people's lives as a result.
