What Matt does

I focus on building high quality websites for small businesses. My design philosophy is one of simple, easy to use interfaces that make it clear for viewers exactly what the website owner is offering, how to find what the user is looking for, what the current page is all about, and how to get to the next step in the websites process.

If you want to talk website design philosophy, give me a holler. I'm always happy to chat.

What Matt does best

I spent over 4 years at Microsoft doing development work with C/C++ and C#. I also have extensive experience in web development from the front end (HTML, CSS, Javascript) to the backend (MySql, Ruby on Rails). I have setup a number of servers from scratch, designed and built the front and backend of website from the ground up, and have experience monitoring the security and traffic on those sites.

Basically, if it's nerdy programming help you need, I probably do it.

What does Matt need?

At the moment I'm in dire need of finding a top notch web designer. Someone that has a lot of experience with e-commerce sites, usability, and asthetics. Additional people I would like find and work with: advertising expert, photogropher, copyrighter, and possibly an SEO expert.

Experience

3/2007 - Present
Self-employed Web Developer
Design and build both the front and backends of websites. This can include building them from scratch or editing an existing site. My current project is a website that allows small businesses to quickly build their own websites. I also run a small company that helps independent musicians sell their music online.

2/2003 - 3/2007
Microsoft Developer
Worked on a number of products including Window Media Center and MSN Messenger. Responsibilities included development using C++/C# and COM. Worked with project managers and other developers to come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.

9/1999 - 12/2002
University of Wisconsin - Madison
While in graduate school, I worked as both a TA and lecturer. This including teaching a class on operating systems to over 200 undergraduates over the course of my last year there. I received the Computer Science departments TA of the year in 2002.

9/1999 - 12/2002
Restaurant Waiter
Waited tables for extra cash while going to graduate school. Anyone that doesn't think this is an incredibly valuable experience, hasn't had to smile at demanding customers after having a long day of classes.

8/1996 - 8/1999
Technical Sales Engineer
I managed sales accounts for all of southern Minnesota for a company that sold high-tech robotics and automation equipment.
