What Mimi does
I have two sides to my business, teaching and custom work.
Teaching: creative / art / hobbyist / honeydo welding classes and fused glass classes.
Custom Work: Studio Steel creates custom metalwork as well as fused glass by commission. We fabricate architectural elements and home furnishings in our Seattle studio. Owner Mimi Riley has the professional experience to guide clients thru the process of articulating their aesthetic in order to create wonderful additions to your home that reflect each clients unique vision of beauty.... Functional, exceptional art to enhance your vision of home.
Studio Steel specializes in contemporary and organic ironwork designs, forged steel, stainless steel and copper often icorporating fused glass elements. Studio steel works directly with designers (landscape and interior), architects and the individual homeowner. We can build from set of plans or design to your specific preferences.
What Mimi does best
I love to meet with custom work clients who are art appreciators that are looking for a sculptural railing or gate. I excel at creating works of art.
I really enjoy teaching enthusiastic welding students, cause it truly is exciting to weld, and fun to share the knowledge.
What does Mimi need?
I need clients that want a custom experience, have the time that custom work takes, and are enthusiastic about the project. I am not looking to do repair welding / industrial welding. In fact, I need to make art, I need to build with my own two hands. I am sure I also need more burn cream and bandaids.
Education
Golly, I was raised in a family that expected me to take over my Dad's medical practice. To that end I studied Latin in High School. Still interested in medicine / research I got my Bachelors of Science in Physiological Psychology at the U of W. I have not once formally used my "education".
After college and some soul deadening jobs I entered a commercial / Industrial Electrical Apprenticeship for 5 years and was a Journeyman for 5 more years after that. I got laid off from the Airport Control tower on Sept. 11 2001 when all the airports shut down. Electrical work really slowed down. I took welding and blacksmithing classes at South Seattle Community College for 1 1/2 years.....and now am loving this phase of my life : )
Experience
I have designed, built and installed many railings and gates. I have also fabricated furniture, lighting etc.....sorta like, if something captures my interest I will figure out how to build it, could be most anything.
