The Dare To Dream Association (D2D) was started with one goal in mind.... "Stop the violence in America" and yes I am aware it is quite the lofty goal but after doing so much research including talking face to face with convicted felons, gang members, domestic violence perpetrators and more, I have made a discovery that is bitter sweet. I discovered that the violence is atrocious and that people know a great deal about it but a large portion of crime goes unreported for fear of repercussions. That was the bitter part, but the sweet part is what I have learned about the issues behind the violence. One common thread I have found in an astonishing 93% of the preps was that it is all they have ever known!
As children growing up dad hits mom, brother hits sister, cousin hits neighbor etc... there are young gang members who have been raised seeing dads, big brothers, cousins, neighbors all use guns and violence to deal with things so what else are they supposed to think? This is the way it is... but what if.....? What if they were able to find out that there ARE options???
There are other ways to deal with the things inside of them be it anger, be it fear, loneliness or any other emotion, ways like MUSIC, DANCE, ART and much, much more. How are children supposed to learn if we don't teach them? After talking to many schools across the country I have sadly learned that for the most part either the schools don't care, or the ones who really do care have so many kids with too few teachers and staff so too many of the kids fall through the cracks.
Our program is being designed to go to the kids, to the schools and centers and reveal to the kids that there are options, to give them the necessary drive and information to make a different choice, a choice to stop the violence.
We will have an 800 number and that number will have information for as many of the programs in all the cities that we can find so if a kid calls us from Toledo Ohio (example) we can tell them what programs are available in their area like the boys and girls clubs as for instance, who will take them no matter what their financial situation. This way they can know that THERE IS A CHOICE!
