  • Macbook - For years I had heard about Apple products being superior. I needed a lighter laptop compared to my monsterous Toshiba which really sucked!! So, I decided to give it a shot.... it was too expensive, so I thought for a few days .... finally, walked into the store and loved it ....bought it right then and there!

  • Attended this event yesterday evening and I even missed the first half of Ignite Seattle for it (and it was worth it)!! This was a superb overview of writing a Business Plan. I enjoyed every minute of this workshop and would recommend anyone interested in creating the right business plan to not hesitate to attend! I feel so comfortable working on my plan today....Thanks Bryan!!

  • Search Engines will not index Flash files (.SWF extensions). However, you load the SWF file through an HTML page!

This will get a bit technical, so I will try to give you an overview of what you can do.

On the HTML page loading the SWF file, you will need to create a section with HTML content in a DIV tag (with an id, eg: SEO-CONTENT). This HTML content is information you want search engines to index.

Next, when the page loads, you will execute a Javascipt, which will test if the browser has Javascript enabled and if the correct version of Flash is installed (which is almost always true or your flash page won't show on browsers). Now (here is the magic), you will create a reference to your SWF file, which will be dynamically loaded and it will replace the content in the DIV (identified as SEO-CONTENT).

In essence, you could have HTML and FLASH content load on your site (depending on the browser settings). But, that requires too much maintenance.

I talked to Adobe last month and they are considering SEO solutions in the upcoming flash versions.

Here is an interesting tool that will make your job easy as far as creating the SEO friendly HTML content. Go to http://www.adobe.com/licensing/developer/search/faq/ and download the SDK and use the swf2html tool to extract HTML content from your flash file.

    Hope that helps!

  • Great article!

I think #8 should be about finding the right partners (If needed). We tend to turn to friends first and I think that is not always the best approach.

    Any thoughts?

  • Bernadette, why do people lose motivation?

I recruited 9 people to work on my startup (not simultaneously) up until Jan '08 (since I started back in Jan '07) and only 2 people have stuck with me (one for a year and the other is a newbie in the 2 week phase, but promising).

The one common thing amongst the others was that they wanted to TALK BIG, but when it came to getting things done, they were always procrastinating or not interested for various reasons.

Was it the day job, being married, family, other commitments, or the idea of having a company (until they had to do real work)?

Many got super-excited initially, but changed their minds (gave up) within 2-3 weeks!

It's hard to tell which category people will fall into... the ones that stuck were being proactive and productive from day 1!

    What are your thoughts?

  • In the past, I have worked on various startups. One was almost successful, but they all failed for the same reason - partners who weren't motivated.

It wasn't until I read this book that I secluded myself from the world and focused on building a demoable product first and then started looking for partners.
