What Richard does

I am a facilitator, mediator, trainer, coach and motivational speaker helping professionals in the workplace communicate and resolve conflict. In my 25 year career as an engineer and manager in the utilities industry and as a naval submarine officer I have accumulated a wealth of experience helping professionals from accountants to nuclear engineers communicate and negotiate with others. I have earned a variety of mediator certifications including eight areas of specialization through the Washington Mediation Association. I have also earned the coveted certification from the International Association of Facilitators. My depth of experience in the business environment and conflict resolution make me uniquely qualified to help you address your greatest communications challenges.

What Richard does best

I help people communicate, particularly in tense and challenging situations. I influence people to work more effectively with others, and to achieve their goals.

What does Richard need?

I market myself primarily to companies with more than ten employees who want to improve communication and cooperation within their workplace. - If you aren't part of company that size, introduce me to someone who is! I offer a free staff meeting energizer (about 30 minutes) that motivates and provides valuable tips for conflict resolution. This is great for the company, and great networking for me, so please introduce me to companies who would benefit from this free offering.

Experience

I began my career with internships for the U.S. Navy, United Nuclear Corporation and Hewlett-Packard. After graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering I was subsequently commissioned as a naval officer and began my military career serving on the submarine USS Baton Rouge (SSN-689). I transitioned to the naval reserves in 1990 and have recently retired as a Lieutenant Commander.

Earning my Professional Engineering licenses in Washington and Alaska, I became the Engineering Manager for the municipal electric, telecommunications and water utilities in Ketchikan, Alaska in 1990. During my nine years there, I managed a variety of projects including financing, permitting and design of a major transmission line, construction of a thermal power generation project, FERC licensing of local hydroelectric projects and numerous power sales negotiations. I also overturned an EPA order to construct a water filtration plant with substantial savings to the community, participated in joint negotiations for acquisition of hydroelectric projects from the State of Alaska by various utilities and assisted the transition of the local exchange carrier to a competitive telecommunications utility.

In 1999 I became the Assistant Manager of the Okanogan Public Utility District in north central Washington. I was involved in the management of all aspects of this electric and telecommunications utility including; negotiations and procurement decisions for power supply; collective bargaining negotiations; mediation of a controversial transmission project; creation of a new fiber optic telecommunications utility and elected to board of directors of the Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) providing regional public access to the Bonneville Power Administration's fiber optic network. During the 2001 western area power shortage I coordinated a number of emergency responses including the urgent construction of a 25 megawatt power generation facility.

I subsequently joined Energy Northwest in 2002 where I facilitated efforts between electric utilities across the Northwest to jointly develop new energy projects including wind, biomass and coal gasification, and represented various utilities in the joint acquisition of electrical substation facilities from the Bonneville Power Administration. In this position I was responsible for keeping Energy Northwest's twenty member utilities and board members appraised of the status of its generating facilities including the Northwest's only commercial nuclear plant.

I began my formal mediation training in 2001. In 2004 I was certified as a mediator with the Benton-Franklin Dispute Resolution Center. In 2006 I was certified by the Washington Mediation Association as a mediator specializing in Commercial/Business; Construction; Domestic Relations; Environmental; Peer Mediation; Labor Relations; Organizational Relations; and Public Policy. Subsequently I was certified by the King County Dispute Resolution Center as a mentor and coach for new trainees and currently provide mediation services to the King County District Court. In 2008 I earned the coveted designation of Certified Professional Facilitator from the International Association of Facilitators.

I now devote my efforts full-time to providing conflict resolution services for his clients primarily in technical professions.
