Background checks are not just for the HR department.

Of course you should!  That is why Gold Shield recently launched Confadate.  Originally Confadate was for on line daters, then it became obvious that there was a need for the home owner to have easy access to affordable, legal background checks for personal hiring decisions.  For example:

These are but just a few examples of why your need Confadate, I am sure you can think of more. As you know, a background check is not an invasion of someone's privacy, but a look at the public aspect of their life, such as have they ever been arrested, if so for what?  Are they a registered sex offender?  This is valuable information you need to make an informed personal hiring decision.  Information not only for your peace of mind, but your safety and that of your family  as well.  True, some may think doing background checks for personal hiring is being paranoid, I think you are being responsible and just plain smart. Sadly the news is full of Innocent people who trusted someone only to end up being that person's victim.  The best indicator of a person is his past.
