Empowering women to be Safe
Being safe does not stop with locking your car door or turning on the outside lights at night, there is much more to it that that. Just by the fact we are women makes us more venerable. In my over 20 years as a police officer in the Metro-Atlanta area, I never met a woman who actually thought she would become a victim. That said, here are a few tips or reminders, if you will, on empowering yourself to be safe.
1. NEVER put your purse in the baby set of a shopping cart then turn your attention to checking the price or caloric content of a product. By the time you realize your purse has been stolen, the bad guy is out the door with your money, credit card, car keys, and he know where you live. Talk about a nightmare. Carry a purse with a strap long enough to wear across your chest, It might not be the fashion statement you want to make, but it is a great deal safer.
2. When you are ready to leave work or have been shopping, have you keys in your hand ready. Nothing says "helpless" than a woman digging through her purse looking for her keys and not paying attention to who is around her.
3. If you are approached, throw those keys as far as you can and scream "FIRE!" Never get in a vehicle with this person.
4. At home, always make it look like someone is home. A good thief checks out his target, so change your schedule every couple days. Leave for work early once or twice a week, get a cup of java at your favorite coffee house. On those days, come home early.
5. The one room that can be occupied 24/7 is the bathroom. If you have a bathroom with a window, but a pretty little lamp and put it on a timer to go off every couple hours.
6. If you are going to be gone for more that a day, stop mail and news paper delivery. Contact your local police department a ask them to do a property check.
7. Keep bushes in front trimmed and well lighted. don't give a thief a place to hide.
8. If you jog, please go with someone in a well lit and populated area. Never tell a stranger when and where you run.
9. Have a "dummy bill fold" Get a cheep bill fold looking thing, put in it an expired credit card and a dollar or two, if you are approached, give them that... they get nothing.
10. Just like with business, do background checks when you make a personal hiring decision. Clearly you don't want a total stranger around your loved ones and valuable property. While we are at it, single ladies it is a good idea to have him checked out before the first date. Remember with one click of your mouse you can meet the love of your life, a sexual predator, or a married man.
