Hi Ken, I am really happy you wrote this. It is really great to see a personal article for a change. (If I see one more article on Twitter, I may have to start a revolt.)
I had a very similar experience, except in a condensed amount of time. I am about 15 years younger than yourself, but went through an awful few years of trying to stay mentally and creatively happy working for someone else. The money was good and steady, but I was dying on the inside.
I think a lot of designers want that "sexy job" at the "sexy firm" that has cool decor and margarita Fridays. But in the end - it comes with sacrifices. I got so burnt out on poor work environments and awful management that I decided to create my own. So I started my business, and while the world is presenting extra obstacles right now for business owners I can honestly say that I have never been happier.
My chocolate lab, Huck, is my only coworker all day, but I get to pay him in bacon.
