Experience
Shannon began her writing experience as the daughter of the managing editor of a small southern daily paper. At the age of five she was told by her editor mother that "the way you argue, you should be a lawyer!" So off Shannon went on her first of many 'unofficial' interviews. Imagine her mother's reaction to a phone call from Judge Sams' office informing her that her daughter would be late getting home from Kindergarten. She had taken a detour to Lawyer's Row and was interviewing the Judge.
In second grade Shannon created an unofficial class newspaper. She used her allowance to purchase tablets of Big Chief paper, extra pencils and a large red rubber eraser. She wrote revealing articles about the injustices of playground gender-based segregation, the growing problem of bullies, and milk money extortionists on campus. She hired her two best friends to scribe the sale copies and peddled them for 25 cents each. Her business took off and soon she had 8 scribes. The paper went bust when parents complained to administrators that their students were more focused on free enterprise than homework. She graduated to larger audiences in the underground high school and college newspaper circles. Shannon eventually graduated with a Masters in Instructional Design and moved on to writing books about marketing and textbooks for disadvantaged students.
She had a voice for the underdog that she wanted to be heard unfettered by the conventional thinking of mainstream editors. Shannon took her lumps and learned how to get enough clout to get the tough interviews that people really wanted to read. She was in the trenches doing it all: building an audience, carving out a niche, and fighting to get noticed.
She then came face to face with the exploding digital age. What a marvelous tool! She mastered the rudiments of blogs, article writing and marketing, social networking, press releases, ebooks, white papers, and micro writing environments. Suddenly, her audience and market base was no longer the local village...it was the world!
