Appear on Oprah: Get Into O, The Oprah Magazine Then Be a Guest on Oprah

Last week I gave a webinar to over 65 PR corporations, boutique PR firms, and independent PR people for Bulldog Reporter. While the hour was about "Placing guests on top talk shows: PR veteran outlines proven program for landing on Oprah" I couldn't help but discuss traveling the path through O, The Oprah Magazine toward the show.


It's a viable avenue that few people tread, much to my dismay, as it's become sort of a secret back door to the Oprah show. One person on the call even asked me how to get on the Oprah Favorite Things Show and...surprise surprise, the producers often start with a review the products that have been selected as favorites in O Magazine.


The magazine has a circulation of 2.65 million. But get this, the pass on rate is estimated to be 6 people per issue. That means that when you get featured, mentioned, or quoted over 18 million people read about you. And since the magazine doesn't often get thrown away your product, service, cause or story is available for review for months and perhaps years.


Many people I spoke with never throw away a single copy of O. And one publicist proudly took me into her office closet to show me her complete collection of O Magazine since it's inception! She's not alone. Although Robyn Okrant at livingoprah.com has become popular by vowing to live by all things Oprah, millions of other women do the same. They're just not blogging about it.


Given the economic downturn there is no better time to get profiled, quoted, featured or reviewed in O, The Oprah Magazine. Even if you don't think you have a chance, think again. With a little creativity and know how you could be proudly saying, "Look on page XXX and read all about me!"


Take a look and see if you fit into any one of the following categories.


1. Authors.

The editors at O receive over 200 books every month. They cover books in several sections and do specials like the August 2008 edition that had a summer special reading section that focused on memoirs. There are many sections of the magazine where your book can get attention. The two most prominent are the Reading Room and Bookshelf.


One woman in my brain exchange group was featured in the July issue of O. Elizabeth Rosner's first novel, The Speed of Light, was highlighted in the "Bookshelf" section of the magazine. This is where celebrities discuss their favorite books. Hers was selected by actor Gillian Anderson, best known for her leading role on The X Files. Rosner had recently returned from London finalizing the film script for the novel's adaptation with Anderson. 


2. Diet & Fitness Experts.

Fat is not going away any time soon. Articles on the world's fastest fitness plan, new diet make-overs for constant snackers, and boosting your beauty from the inside out are all topics that have been emblazoned the cover of the magazine. Similar titles will continue to do so as long as women are concerned with their body image. Like, forever.


3. Beauty Experts, Commentators, or People Who Have Created Beauty Products.

In the "Look What We Found" section you'll find all kinds of stuff from best bath salts to how to hide those dark circles. Do you have a product that can help relax us women when we have time, and conceal our flaws when we don't? It's got to be as gorgeous as it makes you look or feel. That means exquisite packaging that's photo ready. In the "Beauty Gazette" section you can even be a trend forecaster and beauty "futurologist", like Jeanine Recckio who discussed sheets that soften your skin while you sleep. Really now?


4. Jewelry & Fashion Designers.

Got "Naughty Knickers?" A London based Lingerie line did. There is power in a good name. The magazine doesn't just feature major known designers that you've heard of but seeks out boutique firms and creators who create beautiful things that women love. Have a beauty success story for your company? Your trials will play better if your firm almost failed and recovered to tell the tale.


4. Health and Beauty Professionals.

That includes doctors, cosmetic surgeons, estheticians, make-up artists, stylists. Do you have new research on health related issues that women need to know about that can save or extend their lives? Anti-aging is not going away any time soon since we're all prone to it. The latest greatest breakthroughs that make us feel better, look younger or preserve our skin and spirit are in demand. Or, if you don't have products or ideas to prevent old age, tricks and tips to defy the eye are practically as good. And don't forget make-overs. Ever popular and great visually, show how you can transform us from shabby, tired, overworked women to radiant, rested and resilient babes.


6. Retailers, Merchandisers, Inventors, Food Professionals.

Do you have a beauty or pampering product? O, The Oprah Magazine is full of small and large luxury items that are positioned as must-haves. From faux animal skin wallets to tasty treats to special candles. The O List, "A few things we think are great," is a "great" place to get almost any type of product featured. From a "Frisper Freshkeeper" that seals up your refrigerated food to acupressure bands to negate nausea, the possibilities are far reaching. What do they all have in common? Great design, professional presentation, attractive packaging, and appealing colors. And of course functionality.


7. Advice, Relationship, Career Experts.

O, The Oprah Magazine has articles on de-cluttering, organizing, managing stress, having satisfying sex, loving yourself, peace of mind, improving your life and the lives of others, and even buying hope. Willa Shalit helps the women of Rowanda recover from the genocide through her company, Fair Winds Trading, by offering products people want that support third world artisans. Shalit says, "If I can sell people on vag~inas I can definitely sell them on these baskets." How is that for a sound bite? Got my attention.


8. Non-Profits Agencies, Charity, Cause Related Industries, Fundraising Experts.

Oprah's O Magazine editors are always looking for products, events, people and things that bring awareness to womens' causes. Breast cancer has been covered quite a lot as it's still under-reported and there is still much we don't know. Does your non-profit or charity educate us on a little known, but deadly or dangerous disease? Are you helping women or children in some profound way? If so, you're on the right track.


There are many more opportunities. Read the magazine! Study it so you can see where you fit in.
