    Great collection of insider advice!

I'd add, ask yourself what you want the end product of your writing to be, beyond a single sale.

Do you want repeat business? Referrals? More customers? Different or "better" customers?

Once you've answered that question, what do you need to say that will address those customers? It's tricky, but worth the time spent focusing on your audience.

Thanks for posting this article, Lynn!

    Cheers!

    Suzanne

Interesting magazine! What are your prices and do you need writers and/or editors?

    Cheers!

Sorry to have to cancel. Hope to see you at one in the future!

  •

I'm booked, but would love to join you another time! This sounds like an excellent way to "unleash" my hidden artist.

  •

A monday or wednesday would be SO much better! Looking forward to the next one!

Ditto! Ditto! Ditto! Do it again, please!

Pick me! Pick me! My website isn't up yet, but I'm on biznik (duh), linkedin, facebook, and twitter, as well as friendfeed.

Thanks for coming up to do this workshop, Colleen!

Yes, I'd definitely be interested in going to this. I don't think it's "wrong" to keep the old name, but I would call it something catchier. Alt-crew doesn't describe itself enough to draw people in, frankly.

Alternative is a great word. Let's use the whole thing. Aren't we talking about people who are "out of the box" in many ways? We're out of the box, closet, western medicine, mainstream, chainstream, whatever. Let's highlight that and pull in more bizniks. See? I'm already hooked!

On another note, I just checked out your online menu; we are so there! It sounds wonderful. I'm sending links to several friends who would love to eat what you serve.

So sorry to cancel, Annika! My client's website it going live this afternoon and we're still fixing stuff. I'll catch the next one!

  •

Fantastic! Facebook-shmacebook. Linkedin-shminkedin. The future is all about biznik.

    Congratulations! It's well-deserved!

Thanks Judy! I always struggle with getting big projects started and have found this to be really helpful. By allowing yourself to take bites out of a project, and by requiring yourself to take small bites, it feels more like you are holding yourself back rather than shoving yourself forward. I'm using a kind of reverse-psychology on myself. Hey, whatever works!

Kate - With little kids in the house, I have realized the usefulness of putting thoughts to music. We sing about whatever we're doing, whether it rhymes or not. I can sing shopping lists and to-do lists now and it helps me remember what I need.

As far as business is concerned, wouldn't it be great if we all had a theme song for ourselves and for our businesses? I had a friend in college who said he always wanted the Charlie Brown music to play whenever he walked around. My music would be something more jazz/bluesy, like Ray Charles' Rockhouse. What's your theme song? Not the song you sing, now, but the one that represents you and your money garden. Hmm...maybe this is a new thread waiting to happen.

Ken, I agree, use a professional designer, but make best use of your designer's time. The more thought you put into preparation and the clearer your concept, the easier, faster, and cheaper it will be for both of you.

Mike, I'm afraid it's true. The stores this year have concurrent presentations of merchandise for back-to-school, halloween, thanksgiving, and christmas. 2009 is, in fact, upon us. Yikes, indeed!

    Cheers!

Ellen - You are so right! These are exactly the kind of questions I mean. The more questions you ask, the closer you are to pinpointing your audience and their specific needs.

  •

So sorry to cancel! I'll catch the next one! Cheers!

What a great event! It was terrific meeting bizniks I haven't met before, and connecting fellow bizniks to one another (that always feels so good to introduce two people who have a need in common).

What's more, it was a great space to connect further with people I have met, but haven't had a chance to really talk with for any length of time.

The setting at Twist is very condusive to networking, socializing, and finding out more about individuals who pique your interest.

There's a roomy, quieter, talking space with couchy benches and a huge window on the sound, and the darker, standing up and rubbing elbows bar space (which is also very roomy). With two connected, but very different spaces, bizniks can choose their setting to make the most of all possible connections.

Plus, the bartender, Jerry, is super friendly and the waitress, Taylor, did her best to serve everyone all at once with style and a smile; she served all 54 guests. Go biznik!

Thank you all for exceeding my hopes and expectations for my first event! Such a fantastic and interesting group of bizniks really made the event fun.

Thanks Colleen for lettiing us show you the real Seattle, and thanks to everyone for coming out.

This was so much fun, and so easy, I will definitely plan another one soon.

    Cheers!

Any chance you can squeeze it in when you come up in November?

  •

Oh, poo! A kid conflict prevents me from attending. Do it again! I want to know! Cheers!

  •

Melinda - Of course! This is a mixer - purely a social format. Put on your name tag when you get there and start talking with folks. Cheers! Suzanne

Well, this is my first event and I figured I'd make a little splash with an internet celebrity (hee!hee!).

We are, I think, a very friendly city. The combination of native northwesterners and east coast transplants has created a cosmopolitan mix of good energy and savvy creativity (and midwest and southeast and southwest and mid-atlantic and...).

    Cheers!
