More than a million single family residences are built every year in the USA. All of these houses consume an inordinate amount of natural resources and energy. So maybe that is why Building Green has become more widely accepted. It may prove to be not just a passing fancy but a fundamental change in how and why we build the type of houses we live in. It may not reverse the impact of man on our planet but by thinking a few things through we will have healthier and more comfortable homes to live in that they will be less expensive to operate and will even last longer.
I want to be part of the Real Estate Industry that will be able to dispel some of the myths around Building Green. It is not just for tree huggers, it is not too expensive, it doesn’t have to be ugly and another myth that it doesn’t work. I also want to help educate people about the different shades of green and the advantages of having a Verified Green Home and that there is demand for certification. “Greenwashing “is the word used to explain inflated claims. Green can be achievable and worthwhile on every project.
There will be a need for a switch in our current paradigm. We need to get smarter and build with more information. One effective solution is called a Design Charette. This is where the Owner, an Architect, the Builder and as many of the trade subcontractors meet to discuss performance goals. This type of meeting helps to get everyone on the same page. However talking a good game will not be enough. It will take some time to get everyone from the least experienced member of the building crew to the Building Code Inspectors educated.
