Thinking Errors Workshop TONIGHT: What neuroscience is teaching us about decision-making
Anyone interested in attending this workshop tonight, Thursday 9/24? I was planning to attend but can no longer do so. It looks very good. Email Andre at the email below if you would like to attend. I think he has room for a few more people too so if more than one person replies to this I do not think it will be a problem. (I was not prepaid. You will need to pay the $25 for the workshop. It includes some kind of "light food".) (This is forwarded with permission.)
From: Andre Golard [mailto:golard@gmail.com] Subject: Thinking errors workshop September 24
A workshop on what neuroscience is teaching us about decision-making We all make thinking errors. Our brain evolved to deal with a world much simpler than the one we live in. Fear helped our ancestors avoid being eaten by wolves. Fear can prevent us from making wise investments. Recent advances in neuroscience help us understand how the brain is wired to make decisions, and how things go wrong. The purpose of this workshop is to apply this new knowledge, and help you do better.
The program will be part interactive, drawing on participant’s experiences, part lecture to introduce errors to watch for, and the appropriate solutions. The first part of the workshop explores the question of using our gut sense. We’ll present some powerful stories and then learn from each other as we share our own stories in an interactive round table format. We will wrap up with the latest insights from neuroscience on the subject, and the resulting rules for when to trust our gut and when not to. In the second part we’ll review new insights about some common (and costly!) thinking errors that challenge us all. You will learn:
- To recognize common thinking errors
- Where the problem comes from (“Ah, this is my /Nucleus accumbens/ playing tricks with me!”)
- How we can do better o At avoiding the errors, and make fewer mistakes o At exploiting the same errors for fun or profit
When: Thursday September 24. Doors open at 6:00pm, workshop from 6:30 to 8:30pm Where: Kirkland Woman’s Club, 407 First St, Kirkland, WA 98033 Cost: $25, light food will be provided Seating is limited.
